John 19:1-10

John 19:1 - Pilate had Jesus taken away and whipped.

John 19:2 - Then the soldiers weaved a crown of thorns, put it on His head, and draped a purple robe on Him,

John 19:3 - They added, Hail, King of the Jews! and they struck him down with their bare hands.

John 19:4 - Thus, Pilate went before the crowd again, and said to them, Look, here He is for you to see, and you need to know that I can’t find anything wrong with Him.

John 19:5 - Then Jesus came forward, wearing a crown of thorns and he had a purple robe on. And Pilate said to them, Look here is the man!

John 19:6 - When the high priests and church officers saw him they screamed out to him saying Crucify him, crucify him. pilate said unto them, you take him and crucify him for I find that he has done no wrong.

John 19:7 - The Jews answered, Our law says that he must die because he claimed to be the Son of God.

John 19:8 - Pilate was more afraid when he heard that saying

John 19:9 - Went into the judgement hall again, and said to Jesus, Where are you? But Jesus did not answer him.

John 19:10 - The Pilate asked, Won’t you speak to me? Don’t you know that I have the power to execute you, and I also have the power to set you free?

John 19:11-20

John 19:11 - Jesus responded, You have no power over me except that given unto you from my Father and it is he who bears the burden of your actions.

John 19:12 - And from that time on Pilate wanted to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If you let this man go, you are not Ceasar’s friend: anyone who makes a king speak against Ceasar.

John 19:13 - When Pilate heard that, he called in Jesus and took his royal judgment seat in a place called Pavement (otherwise known in Hebrew as Gabbatha).

John 19:14 - And it was the preparing of the passover, and about 6:: and he told the Jews, Look your King!

John 19:15 - The crowd spoke with one voice: Take him away and crucify him! Pilate asked, You would have me crucify your King? and the high priests responded, Caesar alone is our king.

John 19:16 - Jesus was handed over to be crucified and they took him away.

John 19:17 - And he carried his cross into a place called the place of a skull, also named the Hebrew Golgotha.

John 19:18 - The location at which they killed Jesus with a man on either side.

John 19:19 - And Pilate inscribed this title on the cross. And the inscription was JESUS OF NAZARETH KING OF THE JEWS.

John 19:20 - This many of the Jews read: because the place where Jesus was crucified was near to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

John 19:21-30

John 19:21 - Those who were the main priests of the Jews told Pilate not to write, The Jew’s King, but instead to report that he said I’m the King of the Jews.

John 19:22 - Pilate responded, I wrote what I wanted to write.

John 19:23 - Then when they had crucified Jesus, the soldiers took his garments, including his coat, and divided them four ways amongst themselves: now the coat was seamless, woven as a single fabric from the top down.

John 19:24 - They decided as a group to do it and they did.

John 19:25 - Jesus’s mother, his aunt, Mary (Cleophas’ wife) and Mary Magdalene stood by the cross of Jesus.

John 19:26 - Jesus then saw his beloved mom standing with the disciple and told her to look at her son.

John 19:27 - Then he said to the disciple, Here is your mother! From that time on he took her into his home.

John 19:28 - Then, knowing that everything had been done to fulfill what was written in the scriptures, Jesus said: I’m thirsty.

John 19:29 - They brought a jug full of vinegar. They dipped a sponge into the vinegar and then put hyssop on it. Then they put the sponge up to his mouth for him.

John 19:30 - When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, It is done: and he let his head fall, and he died.

John 19:31-42

John 19:31 - It was almost a holy day and it wouldn’t be appropriate to have bodies on the cross displayed. So the Jews asked Pilate if they could break the legs of the men on the cross so that they would die quicker and the bodies could be disposed.

John 19:32 - Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the other two men who were crucified with him.

John 19:33 - By the time they got to Jesus they saw that he was already dead and so they didn’t do him any more harm.

John 19:34 - One of the soldiers pierced his side with his spear and out flowed both blood and water.

John 19:35 - What he said was true and proven, so that you might believe.

John 19:36 - These things happened in order to fulfill Old Testament prophecy, in this case, that none of his bones would be broken.

John 19:37 - In addition, another Scripture says, they will look at somebody whom they have stabbed.

John 19:38 - And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, Being a secret disciple of Jesus, because of his fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him permission. He came here then, and took the body of Jesus.

John 19:39 - Nicodemus, who had first visited Jesus late at night, brought some of the traditional burial spices–myrrh and aloe. He brought about 10 lbs.

John 19:40 - Then they took the body of Jesus to wrap it in linen gauze infused with spices according to the Jewish tradition for burial.

John 19:41 - At the site of the crucifixion was a garden, and in the garden was a newly built tomb in which no one had yet been laid.

John 19:42 - The sepulcher was so close, they decided to lay Jesus there so they could use the Jewish day of preparation.
