John 19:31 - It was almost a holy day and it wouldn’t be appropriate to have bodies on the cross displayed. So the Jews asked Pilate if they could break the legs of the men on the cross so that they would die quicker and the bodies could be disposed.
John 19:32 - Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the other two men who were crucified with him.
John 19:33 - By the time they got to Jesus they saw that he was already dead and so they didn’t do him any more harm.
John 19:34 - One of the soldiers pierced his side with his spear and out flowed both blood and water.
John 19:35 - What he said was true and proven, so that you might believe.
John 19:36 - These things happened in order to fulfill Old Testament prophecy, in this case, that none of his bones would be broken.
John 19:37 - In addition, another Scripture says, they will look at somebody whom they have stabbed.
John 19:38 - And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, Being a secret disciple of Jesus, because of his fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him permission. He came here then, and took the body of Jesus.
John 19:39 - Nicodemus, who had first visited Jesus late at night, brought some of the traditional burial spices–myrrh and aloe. He brought about 10 lbs.
John 19:40 - Then they took the body of Jesus to wrap it in linen gauze infused with spices according to the Jewish tradition for burial.
John 19:41 - At the site of the crucifixion was a garden, and in the garden was a newly built tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
John 19:42 - The sepulcher was so close, they decided to lay Jesus there so they could use the Jewish day of preparation.
